A friend of mine found out that she has low levels of progesterone. She and her dh would love to have a baby. They have been trying for over a year and so she went to an herbalist and he said she is low on progesterone. She was on birth control pill (I don't know what kind) for many years. She has been off is for over a year. She hasn't been having periods but isn't pregnant. The herbalist suggested a combo pill called mother's comfort. It has dong quai, red raspberry leaf, black cohosh, marshmallow something (i forget) and something else. Any way, I gave her a book on nfp and told her to start charting her temp and mucus because I don't think she should try to get pg while taking this combo. She has a 2 mo. supply so I told her to see if that is enough to get her regular again. But if her mc doesn't return in those 2 mo. do you think she should try progesterone cream? I have heard people talk about it but I don't know if it is by prescription only or not? What do you all think? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

jmommy.. I'm low on progesterone too.. and last year I lost 6 babies. It's actually becoming very common for women to be low in progesterone in our society. I took Vitex.. I'm surprised vitex wasn't in that combo. From what I see written in the list, there's nothing in there that concerns me.. what concerns you? Those contraceptive pills can really mess you up, it's quite possible she may need something to jumpstart her reproductive system again.
The thing about progesterone cream is.. it's quite ambiguous as to how much you're using.. and it's not fixing the problem, it's like putting another bandaid solution on the problem.. She'll be adding progesterone to her body.. but what happens on a day she forgets, or runs out etc.. I think a better solution is to get the pituitary gland to become healthy again and get itself regulated so it is producing the progesterone her body needs.. and that's why I chose Vitex over progesterone cream. The vitex fixes the pituitary gland... then it can work properly. Then it is giving the body the correct dose of progesterone.
