Pregnant Moms... what are you reading as you walk towards your births? I haven't really read much this pregnancy thus far, but I am thinking of pulling some of my favorites from my lending library to read again. I read Ricki Lake's new book for fun... "Your Best Birth". I have also gazed through Spiritual Midwifery and Ina May's Guide to Natural Childbirth, Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way, etc. and may go back to some of those for some reinforcement as the time gets closer...I don't know. FWIW, for those of you who have more mainstream friends and family, Ricki's book posed some good questions and food for thought for moms who may not have strayed much from the "What to Expect When Youre Expecting" mindset. I think for my own benefit, I may read Mother's Intention, How Belief Shapes Birth by Kim Wildner, again. I also want to read my copy of The Childbirth Manual by Sandra Roberge, because it has some good, basic information about childbirth at home, and keeping things low risk, normal, etc. I think I would like to review the material in my Lamaze childbirth educator binder, because it is FULL of studies promoting normal birth and protecting that mindset. I think that would help keep my mind focused on what is true, right, and lovely...and confident! I have Holistic Midwifery 1 and 2, Understanding Diagnostic Tests in the Childbearing Year, and Heart & Hands if I need to quick reference anything... and maybe I will read Womanly Art of Breastfeeding again, just for the heck of it. Anyone else care to share what is on their reading list?

Supernatural Childbirth by Jacki Mize
Special Delivery by Rahima Baldwin
also that Bradley natural birth book, although I lean more heavily on Supernatural Childbirth and pray the prayers in there with a believing and expectant heart just about every day.

Hi
I haven't done much 'birth' reading this time around either.

I do plan on making a decision about a midwifery text to invest in can't decide between Varney's or Frye's
Any input would be appreciated :flowers:

I also plan on buying Lynn Griesemer's book Unassisted Homebirth An Act of Love

I have Pushed but never did read it...

And have many others I can go back to.

I ended up reading a lot about health and diet in general right before and during these early months.

Not that you are asking for my opinion, but I would go with Frye's hands down (Volume 1 if you have to choose, both if you can...) It just makes more sense in a homebirth setting. Even Frye's information is HUGe...but Varney's is just dry and overly clinical, even for a "textbook"...I don't know how much of it applies to a homebirth setting, esp. UC...whereas Frye's is for midwives, it can be useful to pregnant women as well if you wanted to extend your information that far. Just my .02

Thanks ladies I can now see after several recommendations Frye's is more for me. I never got to hold either text in my hands and thumb through before... I wonder why some midwifery schools bother using Varenys?
And I HAVE TO get back to the Christian Midwifery I did start that but got sidetracked and almost forgot about it!
Looks very good from the first chapters.

Jewel, your special day is getting so close!
How exciting.

I was doing a search on the Frye books for cost and ordering info.
She has her own site here http://www.midwifery...ol_mid/toc.html
It's nice to see the break down of the content

Also I found this gem maybe if we can't get the text I will at least pick this up for 30.

I had ordered this book. The post office had accidently delivered it to the wrong address and I had given up hope of reading it anytime soon.... but I spoke to the postal carrier and today I was suprised that they found my book! It was accidently delivered to the university near our home ....I am so glad to have received it. My 4 yr old was fascinated by the photo of the newborn baby on the front. I think we spent a few hours talking about the baby's umbilical cord, (as the one on the front cover is freshly clamped).

BTW, I was discussing birth yesterday with a friend and she told me that the phrase "do not fear" is in the Bible 365 times ... has anyone heard that before? I think that is a nice thought to frame your day with!

I have never read anything by Anne Frye, but one day our family was visiting a church we don't regularly attend for a memorial service and we met another family, the mother of it was a home birth midwife. We told them that one of my daughters is studying midwifery and the husband chimed in saying something like, "Stay away from anything by Anne Frye! It's all new age and you need to protect your daughter from reading that stuff."

Now, I don't even KNOW these people and I was sort of shocked by the forcefulness of his admonishment. It almost made me want to go buy her book and read it straight through, but that's the rebel in me. :D

Anyway, just a heads up to those ladies that are sensitive to that issue, Anne Frye is not a believer.

Anne Frye is very intelligent... I think at one time she was not a believer but I am on a christian midwifery list and I believe this subject is brought up and verified that she is now a believer. As a sidenote, how many books and things in this world are produced by unbelievers? I have read her stuff...I am telling you, she knows her stuff. I haven't found it to be anywhere near as out there spiritually as some midwifery texts, fwiw.

I am careful to hear what most people say about New Age. I have known many that totally dismiss Chiropractic and other alternative or holistic well care methods because of the origin of the practices... I myself once leaned a bit to that thinking. But I can not dismiss the health benefits of other cultural and religious practices and as long as I do not worship as a pagan I do not fear I am sinning in using some of that natural wisdom...

I also have experienced being in christian circles where the 'worship' of modern medicine was so prevalent that marked HARM was done to many a believer.

So I still am looking to get those text.

I haven't had time to read much yet, but I think it will be a good book for reference. I like to have several texts to weigh when I am faced with a question... (for example handling hemorrage or pregnancy induced hypertension vs. existing or chronic hypertension, etc). I really tend to side with the motto of "freedom of choice BASED ON KNOWLEDGE OF ALTERNATIVES" ... Of course, I don't agree with everything I read, but I value the opportunity to read and filter, yk?

I am glad I have added it to my library though.

The ladies that wrote the book are good sources of experience! That is what attracted me.

I finally talked to my husband about my book choices and am waiting to see what he says about $$ investment.
