My daughter and her husband had their first baby at home, attended by a midwife.
One of the best things for me, besides having a grandson, of course, is that so much of what I went through with my first hospital birth and what I learned through my home births, both with and without midwives, redounded to my daughter's benefit as she made choices about her birth. She had the benefit of access to information that I didn't have when I first gave birth. She has all her female parts intact, and her dignity intact. She didn't surrender anything to anyone except throwing herself into the loving care of the Father who designed her, created her and gave her life.
Her husband's mother, who had 9 children, some at home, some in a hospital, was also a source of great encouragement and knowledge during her pregnancy. My daughter married a man that believes home birth is best for his wife and children. Most of the credit for that goes to his mother.
So, take heart, ladies. Your children are watching how you go through your child bearing years. And while we may not change the way birth is perceived in our countries over night, we are making a difference in one life at a time. Another child was born peacefully, into the arms of his mother. Rejoice with me!
I edited this to add a link to my daughter's birth story for those who like to read such things. :D
